All of these pieces
were found on
Maricasa property.
Most of them were
found by Pablo as he
was hoeing weeds,
moving rocks or raking
leaves and were within
3 or 4 inches of the
surface. Rarely do we
find anything that is
not broken. Pot shards
are literally
everywhere you step
on the property.
On the property there
are mounds which
served as platforms
for the Mayan wood
houses. There is also
a small unexcavated
pyramid.
Pirates also plied
these waters later
and the broken glass
bottle is from that
period.
We are not allowed to
disturb the mounds
nor the pyramid and
we don't.
"The Mayan culture emerged in the lowland area of the Yucatan Peninsula and the highlands to the south, in
what is now southeastern Mexico, Guatemala, western Honduras, and Belize. Many aspects of this culture
persist in the area despite nearly half a millennium of European domination. All evidence, whether from
archaeology, history, ethnography, or linguistic studies, points to a cultural continuity in this region. The
descendants of the first settlers in the area have lived there for at least three millennia."
