Transportation
Where is Maricasa?
We are located in the southern part of Quintana Roo near the large town of Chetumal. From the center of Chetumal the village of Calderitas is approximately 5 miles. From
Calderitas to Maricasa is about 2 miles. This link gets you to a map of all of the Yucatan.
Fly
You can fly in to Chetumal via Aviacsa airlines. There is one flight per day via Aviacsa. Unfortunately their website does not seem to have links to making reservations
directly but this link takes you to a page with phone numbers. Right now Aviacsa has discounted flights on Tuesdays costing about$200US. To fly in to Chetumal via
Aviacsa you must fly through Mexico City and change planes. The flight leaves Mexico City at 10:40 am arriving in Chetumal at 12:30. The return flight from Chetumal
leaves at 1:15 arriving at 3:20. You might have to spend the night in Mexico City if you can't get an early flight into Mexico City.
You can also fly to Chetumal via AeroCaribe Airlines which is operated by Mexicana Airlines. There is one flight per day leaving Mexico City at 7:40 pm and arriving in
Chetumal at 9:35 pm. It is flight number 7211. Returning to Mexico City is flight 7210 leaving Chetumal at 9:00 am arriving in Mexico City at 11:00 am. The cost is
approximately $300US. This flight schedule would allow you to make the trip in one day from the US or Canada.
You can also fly into Cancun via many different airlines and the rates are pretty cheap from many cities in the US and Canada as there are millions of people who fly there
each year. Recently they have started providing flights from Cancun to Chetumal.
Bus
If you fly into Cancun, you can take an express luxury bus to Chetumal which takes about 5 hours on a new highway. Buses are a great way to get around Mexico and should
not be avoided. From Chetumal to Cancun there are at least 6 buses leaving throughout the day. The cost one way to Cancun is from $22. Here is a link to information about
buses in Mexico.
Car
If you fly into Cancun you can rent a car in Cancun and drive to Chetumal. You won't get lost as you just head straight south on Highway 307 to Chetumal and we can get
you the rest of the instructions to get to the land from there. You don't need any special driver's license to drive a car in Mexico.
Taxi
If you arrive by bus in Chetumal and we are not available to pick you up from the bus station, you can take a taxi to the land. It isn't expensive...less than $5US as the
distance is not far.
Bicycle
Once you are here at Maricasa it is just a leisurely pedal down a country road to Calderitas and, if you are more ambitious, you can even pedal into Chetumal though I would
not recommend it. You can also easily pedal to the ruins of Oxtankah and, with quite a bit more effort, to the villages of Luis Echeverria, Laguna Guerrero, and Raudales.
Boat
If you have a boat you can: go to the island of Tamalcab (about 5 minutes), go north into the manatee sanctuary and Laguna Guerrero, go south and slightly east to
Ambergris Cay, Belize for world-class SCUBA diving and snorkeling, go south and more east to through a canal to the Caribbean to Xcalak, Banco Chinchorro, north to
Majahual, Sia'an Ka'an and Cancun if you really get ambitious. You can go fishing or waterskiing and you can go up the Rio Hondo which is the border between Mexico and
Belize all the way to Guatemala....there is also access to Laguna Bacalar and Laguna de Milagros from the Rio Hondo. I expect that exploring all there is to do by boat may
take a couple of years.
How do we get there? Do we need a car? What about public transportation? Can I drive there from the US?
Do I need a special license?
